The arrow flew, but none could tell
If apple pierced or humble son,
Until one or the other fell-
Determined contest lost or won.
The dart flew like a bat from hell
Toward Walter, son of William Tell.
We all know that poem. Archery has been around for thousands of years and is still a popular sport today. The arrows, along with the bow itself are the most important pieces of the set. A good arrow determines your aim, having to constantly compensate for a perfect aim, likely the arrow is no good. Each archery arrow has its one purpose.
The stiffness of the shaft of the arrow, in other words the stiffness of the spine will determine how much the arrow wobbles through the air after being shot from its bow. The weight of the arrow is important too. The lighter arrows will whip through the air at a much higher speed than a heavy weighted arrow. The lighter weight arrow will not do as much damage to its target as the heavy one will. If out hunting that big game, the weight of the arrow makes a huge difference.
There are different types of materials to make a shaft of the arrow. Wood, aluminums, or carbon might be used. You must know a little about each type of arrow and then you can choose the one right for your needs. The arrow head is very important as well. Hunting quail with a broad head will destroy the bird completely. There is not much to a quail, so using that type of arrow head is not sound advice. Then, if hunting that big bucked deer or moose, you will want the broad head on the arrow.
The nock of an arrow is very important, some say it is not. Do not let them fool you into thinking otherwise. The knock holds the arrow in place on the string as the bow is being pulled back, or drawn. They re usually just a small slot cut into the arrow and then they are attached to the arrow. They can be made out of wood, plastic or horn. The nock should not be too tight or it will impede the release of the arrow.
Fletching or the feathers on the arrows are important as well. Some are still made of real feathers others use plastic. Get the ones with the real feathers. Although the feathers tend to wear out faster than plastic they are still prettier. Buy the best archery arrows you can afford. And they can be expensive as well. One type of archery arrows are made of cedar wood and can break the bank, for 144 in a package the price can start at $600.00 with a real good discount. And they only have plastic fletching. There are archery arrows for children as well as adults. Be safe when using the archery arrows. Just don’t go and aim an arrow at any human being. Just enjoy them.
